  Sept. 06--Federal authorities say they found more than 47 pounds of cocaine in a carry-on bag belonging to Neal A. Chesterfield, one of Gov. Kenneth Mapp's security guards.

  Chesterfield, 37, was arrested Saturday at King Airport on St. Thomas as he waited to board a Spirit Airlines flight to Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

  According to the Virgin Islands Personnel Department website, Chesterfield is employed by the Virgin Islands Police Department as a Dignity Security Officer.

  The U.S. Attorney's Office identified Chesterfield as one of Mapp's security officers.

  The Personnel Department website noted Chesterfield earns $70,000 a year in his security position.

  Chesterfield had his initial court appearance and detention hearing Monday in District Court.

  Magistrate Judge Ruth Miller remanded him to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending trial.

  According to the complaint and affidavit filed with the court, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection canine alerted to the presence of narcotics in Chesterfield's carry-on luggage while he was waiting in the Spirit Airlines gate area.

  According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Chesterfield had used his law enforcement credentials to bypass TSA screening, and was about to board Spirit flight 212 to Fort Lauderdale.

  When his carry-on luggage was inspected, officers discovered 18 plastic-wrapped packages weighing a total of 21.44 kilograms, according to the prosecutor's office.

  The U.S. Attorney's Office said the contents tested positive for the presence of cocaine, and Customs officers also discovered $26,025 in cash inside a small computer bag Chesterfield was carrying.

  The case is being investigated by law enforcement officials from U.S. Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations, and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. It is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Delia Smith, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

  If convicted, the office said Chesterfield faces a minimum sentence of not less than 10 years in prison, and a fine of up to $10 million.

  No comment was available from Government House regarding Chesterfield's arrest.
